Invasive Biomass to Biochar Carbon Removal Program

Invasive Biomass to Biochar Carbon Removal Program

Palani · Dindigul District — Tamil Nadu

A decentralised biochar production program that converts invasive woody biomass into durable carbon storage — turning an ecological liability into a certified removal asset.

The feedstock is the problem itself: Lantana camara, Prosopis juliflora, black wattle, pine and eucalyptus. These species crowd out native regeneration, alter fire behaviour, deplete groundwater and degrade grazing land across the Palani landscape. Removing them is already a conservation priority; the biomass has simply had nowhere useful to go.

Controlled pyrolysis converts that biomass into biochar, locking carbon into a form stable for centuries rather than releasing it through decay or open burning. Applied to local agricultural soils, the biochar improves water retention, nutrient availability and yield — so the same operation delivers invasive control, durable carbon removal, soil improvement and rural employment.
